Pilates was developed in the 1920s by a man named Joseph Pilates. It focuses on restoring the spine to its natural curves, giving adherence to core stability and body awareness. Pilates movements are fluid to create sleekness, rather than bulk.
Specific principles are focused on and reinforced throughout each exercise, which include firing the deep abdominal muscles through proper breathing patterns, and correct placement of the pelvis, ribcage, scapulae, and neck. We perform these exercises using either a mat or equipment.
Benefits of Pilates include increasing and balancing strength and flexibility, helping to prevent injury, enhancing physical fitness, improving coordination and circulation, relief of pain and tension, and stronger, more stable joints.
Pilates is beneficial for everyone, regardless of age gender, or fitness level. It has proven itself for over 80 years as a safe, effective, and intelligent method of exercise.
